Case Study 1
The technical innovation team of a global petrochemical company approached Intuition to explore the possibility of sharing technical documentation with colleagues on mobile devices. The result of this collaboration was an ePublishing solution that enables field engineers to access all documentation via an application on their iPad. From within the app, engineers could also create public and / or private comments, bookmark documents and share new techniques and knowledge with colleagues around the world.
The maintenance and distribution of technical and process documentation is a common challenge across the industry. In this particular case, it was found that engineers on oil rigs need access to vast amounts of information in the execution of their day to day tasks, for example manuals relating to machinery, technology, standard operating procedures and processes. Traditionally this information has been paper based, bulky, expensive to print and update and a challenge to distribute to a dispersed audience. Mobile technology provides organizations with an opportunity to harness cost and performance efficiencies by distributing this type of information electronically and managing knowledge efficiently.
Intuition worked with the client to develop a requirements document for the solution, which led to a long list of functional requirements that you might expect from an electronic reader, including ability to re-size text, scroll, bookmark pages etc. However the real opportunity that emerged from this process was the requirement for an integrated social learning layer.
